We are Mothers

How old are your children?

She asks.

How long have you been with your partner?

She asks.

What does your heart ache for in the dead of night when sleep is a phantom cackling in the corner, laughing at your useless attempts at capture?

She asks.

For when she looks into my eyes

She sees me

She is me

We are tied

She and I

She knows how it feels to meet a tiny human and forget how you got here before them

She knows how it feels to look into expectant eyes and know that an entire future is held in your hands

She knows how it feels to watch your soul grow, like a seed that you have planted and watered and loved every hour of every day

We are tied

She and I

We are women

Threading the needle

Day in

Day out

Doing the work

Crafting the people

Who keep doing the work

Of building this world.
